Two weeks ago I went to enquire about a new fireplace, a friend of mind had just bought one and had highly recommended a shop in town. When I got there the guy was only too happy to help. He took down all our details and booked an appointment so he could come and examine our house to see what work needed to be done. I was initially very impressed with the service. The guy seemed honest and open about the problems we had, he explained things simply and the quote he gave was reasonable. I was convinced that he had given a fair assessment and fair price and was willing to make a purchase.
The following Saturday afternoon my wife and I went down to the shop to pick out the model and the various pieces we wanted. When I asked to speak with the man who had visited us earlier in the week he could barely remember who we were. After a few reminders he then took us into the office where he spent a good 15 minutes going through ledgers trying to find where he had written down our details. Eventually he found the information and we spent the next hour or so picking out our new fireplace.
Now the story doesn't end there, unfortunately for Mr Fireplace he didn't have some of the items we wanted in stock. He did promise that if I was to telephone on Monday morning he would have sourced the items and would put together a quote. Well whenever I phoned he wasn't available, nor was he available the next time I called 2 days later. Both times I left messages asking to be contacted and I'm still waiting over a week later. This morning as I was leaving for the office a flier got dropped into my letter box advertising a new fireplace shop in town. I'm going to give my current guy one more chance, mainly because I don't want to go through the whole consultation process again, also with the cold weather coming in over here in Northern Ireland I need that fireplace up and running before much longer.
What we have here is an example of someone who has too much work on his plate and is relying on a book keeping system that just isn't up to the job. He's not only missing out on business but alienating existing customers at the same time.
